| Born Nicholas Kim Coppola January 7th, 1967, to a professor of literature and famous dance choreographer, Nicholas received the acting bug early from watching his famous uncle, director Francis Ford Coppola. Not wanting to make his name by means of the Coppola name, Nicholas assumed the moniker Cage and proceeded to secure quirky roles in movies like Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Rumble Fish, before landing the lead role as the new wave hero in Valley Girl. The quirky, mixed up, Elvis-loving hero stereotype would follow Cage through the next decade with films like Peggy Sue Got Married, Wild at Heart, Raising Arizona, Moonstruck and a Vampires Kiss (which it was rumoured he ate a live cockroach for one million dollars), as well as the reputation of commitment he made to understanding his characters in order to bring truth to their portrayal. Cage’s breakaway performance came with the release of the 1995 Mike Figgis film ‘Leaving Las Vegas’, the role of Ben Sanderson an alcoholic on a suicide mission called life. The role garnered an Oscar for Cage as well as an invitation to the realm of A-list actor. Soon after, Cage would reinvent himself once again, becoming the reluctant action hero of the late 1990’s, starring in films like Con Air, The Rock and Gone in 60 Seconds. |
